Project Description: The Centre for Environmental and Marine Sciences is focussed on teaching students in the Environmental sciences field-based skills. Biology and environmental science are at their heart field discisplines, and it's important that they are taught in the field. We think it's really important that students have practical and analytical abilities that match their theoretical understanding of the environment. As part of this I have put together a module in Canopy Science that looks at a broad range of issues in forest ecology and conservation and as its practical component runs students through CAL's BCAP course. It culminates with a practical assessment based on students sampling in the forest canopy.
As far as I know this is the first course of its kind, at least in the UK, so we're expecting to learn a lot as we go along, but I am hoping that it will be a valuable addition to the student experience and provide us with a few more enthusiastic canopy scientists to ultimately feed into the research pool.
