Project Description: My NERC-funded PhD is currently in the second year. One year of work has been completed, included 3 months fieldwork. The project is located in the Kosnipata Valley on the border of Manu National Park. The whole project is entering its 5th year of intensive activity.
The whole project aims to quantify the diversity, ecology and carbon cycling of the forests of the Eastern slope of the Andes, encompassing the high altitude grassland through to the tropical lowland rainforest in a transect of 1ha plots.
My project aims to establish the climatic controls on the distribution of bromeliad species within the transect. As keystone species in the ecosystem bromeliads are very important in the functioning of montane cloud forests. Using plot data and information on the distribution of bromeliad species I aim to understand the mechanisms controlling the distribution of bromeliads.
