Canopy Science

Ant Community Structure in the High Canopy of Lowland Dipterocarp Forest

Scientist:   Kalsum Mohd Yusah

Contact Email:   kalsum.myusah@gmail.com

Institution:   University of Cambridge, UK; CAL

Project Description:
The study will try to understand of what determines the structure of ant communities in the high canopy. It is thought that they are influenced by food resources, availability of nesting sites or differences in tree morphology. I have been carrying out baiting, observation, video recording and fogging in order to investigate this. All of these methods involve extensive climbing and rigging. Fieldwork is taking place in one of the pristine lowland rainforest reserves in Borneo; Danum Valley Conservation Area, Sabah, Malaysia. I am currently on my second phase of fieldwork.
